Compression is very versatile and there is no so-called "certain" rule to use in any situation. As your work material and requirements are different, the compressor will become a different processing tool. But next, I will tell you how to quickly use compression to get the sound you want.
Use 1: Improve vocal integration
Sometimes you don't really want to squeeze the vocals, but you do feel that the vocals are too sudden in the whole music and some of the peaks in some sentences are too high. Using a compressor can press vocals into the music and bring them closer to each other as a whole. This should be the effect you want. And want to do these you need what kind of parameter settings?

In audio, you can hear some peaks in the human soundtrack that are too prominent. A fast Attack value allows the compressor to push the peak instantaneously, and with a fast Release value, the effect on the vocal signal is minimized. The compression ratio must be high enough to hold the peak of some sentences in the vocal sound smoothly.

Use 2: Flatten vocals
Basically, if you want to make the volume of the vocal level quite flat or even not change, it is necessary for the compressor to respond to the entire waveform. By pulling down the threshold, the entire signal is compressed by the compressor (Figure 2). This will not be a good sound, but if your singer does not know how to control dynamic changes, it is only you who make his voice smooth. In addition, the use of such compression methods in rock and rock and even heavy metal genre can ensure that the vocal sound has been stable without being overwhelmed by instrumental sounds.

Use 3: Highlight the snuff drum's breathing
There is a good technique to make your drum rhythm more rhythmic, that is, timely compression of snare drums. The snare drums "breathe" with the advancement of the music in a timely manner, allowing the drums to be more compact and more dynamic.

Now, if we want the compression effect to work with time, then what we really use is the compressor's release time parameter. Obviously what we need is a reasonable compression. At this time, the compression ratio should be around 4:1 and it should be depressed by several dB. We can't make the start time sound dull, so first we mention the start time as soon as possible, and then slowly increase the start time until the snare has a kind of jumping force. 3). And by setting the release time, you can make the snare drum to follow the music and breathe. What needs to be considered is to pay attention to the breath after each blow, and be careful to stop the compressor from stopping before the next blow.

Application 4: Strengthen the sense of heavy drums
As with the snare drum, the setting of the start and release time values ​​will give the sound profile a higher resolution. If we want to attenuate the hit sound from the hi-hat, so that the drum sounds more mellow and smoother, then make sure that the compressor's start time is small enough or fast enough. Use 5: increase the sound head thud
Similarly, by adjusting the start time value, you can avoid the compression of the compressor head. Usually a longer start time allows the head to retain the original impact, although many times you want a deeper, melodious drum sound, as shown in Figure 5.
