The ranking of the global innovation index in 2017 shows that Switzerland, Sweden, and the Netherlands are the three most innovative countries in the world. In this list, Spain has entered the top 30, and Chile is the only Latin American country among the top 50.

In the top 25 of this year's rankings, with the exception of China, which ranks 22nd, the remaining 24 are high-income economies. In 2016, China became the first middle-income economy to enter the top 25.

The Global Innovation Index was jointly issued by Cornell University, the British School of International Business School and the World Intellectual Property Organization. From 2007 to now, dozens of indicators such as patent applications and education expenditures have been collected each year to investigate about 130 economies.

It is understood that the 2017 Global Innovation Index will assess the innovative capabilities and measurable outcomes of 127 economies around the world through 81 indicators. The 81 indicators of the indicator system are divided into seven categories: system, human capital and research, infrastructure, market maturity, business maturity, knowledge and technology output, and creative output.

Among the seven major categories of indicators, China has improved in five categories: systems, human capital and research, infrastructure, knowledge and technology output, and creative output. The report shows that China is the only middle-income country that has continuously narrowed its innovation gap with the economies of developed countries and has successfully joined the ranks of global innovation leaders.

The 2017 Global Innovation Index shows that China is further advanced in innovation quality and ranked 16th. This is also the fifth consecutive year that China has become a leader in innovation rankings in middle-income countries. Among them, the major additions come from domestic market mass, knowledge workers, original patents, high-tech exports, and original industrial designs. These sub-projects rank first in China.
