New York City recently said that the city is conducting a field test on LED outdoor lighting products from nine manufacturers, testing in Central Park in New York and Roosevelt East River Park Avenue (FDRDrive).
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) is currently working with the NGO Climate Group, an international, independent, non-profit organization that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, address global warming, and To improve the leadership of commercial organizations and government agencies in combating climate change, Climate Group is currently conducting the first LED lighting pilot test at two locations in New York. The two locations will also be evaluated by the US Department of Energy's Gateway Solid State Lighting Demonstration Program, which aims to provide independent third-party assessments of installed LED products for use in real-world environments.
The LED test project is part of a plan to develop a world-class, eco-friendly, energy-efficient neighborhood developed by NYCDOT director Janette Sadik-Khan. At the same time, with the help of the Gateway demonstration project, this test will confirm the performance of the LED lighting products and the energy saving effect. In addition, 25 million visitors per year in Central Park and 15,000 drivers per day at Roosevelt East River Park Avenue will experience the changes brought about by LED lighting technology.
Through cooperation with Climate Group and Gateway, the City will receive more reliable data reports on life, power consumption and lighting performance. It is understood that the products participating in these tests come from 9 different companies, including the Central Park LED test. Vendors include King Luminaire, Lumec, Sentry, Spring City and Sylvania. Vendors participating in the FDR Avenue include BetaLED, e Lumen, LED Roadway Lighting and LSI. The test cycle lasts for 12 months.
The test is also part of Climate Group's global LED pilot program, which plans to conduct similar trials in 10 major cities around the world, including London and Mumbai, and New York is the first major city to participate in the program.
In evaluating the energy-saving effects of LED lighting, the US Department of Energy said that LED products can save at least 60% of energy costs compared to existing street lighting products. They also pointed out that the white light emitted by the LED will be better than the light emitted by the high-pressure nano lamp to help the pedestrians and drivers to see the road.
