Maxim Introduces Industry's First 2-String HB LED Driver (Photo)

Maxim introduces the industry's only two-string HB (high-brightness) LED driver, the MAX16838, ideal for automotive electronics. The device integrates a boost or SEPIC switching converter, a 2-channel current sink regulator, and all necessary power MOSFETs. The MAX16838 optimizes conversion efficiency, provides complete fault protection, and achieves a 5,000:1 brightness adjustment range without the need for any external components. This HB LED driver is ideal for LCD backlight applications, especially for LCD backlights in automotive displays.
The MAX16838 optimizes conversion efficiency by automatically adjusting the output voltage of the switching converter to the supply voltage required by the LED. The device's patent-pending architecture enables a 5,000:1 ultra-wide LED brightness adjustment range at 200Hz and a 200kHz to 2MHz switching frequency that can be synchronized to an external clock to improve EMC performance. In addition, the MAX16838 offers a comprehensive range of protection features including LED fault protection, overtemperature and overvoltage protection. If an LED is open or shorted, the drive will automatically turn off the affected LED string and keep the other string working, which increases system reliability.
The MAX16838 is capable of delivering 150mA per string of LEDs and operates over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range with a wide input voltage range of 4.75V to 40V. The device is available in thermally enhanced 4 x 4mm, 20-pin TQFN and TSSOP packages.
