Introduction to 802.11ac

802.11ac, an 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) communication standard, communicates through the 5 GHz band (also known for its name). In theory, it can provide up to 1 Gbps of bandwidth for multi-drop wireless LAN communication, or a single connection transmission bandwidth of at least 500 Mbps.

802.11ac is the successor to 802.11n. It adopts and extends the concept of air interface derived from 802.11n, including: wider RF bandwidth (up to 160MHz), more MIMO spatial streams (up to 8), multi-user MIMO, and higher order modulation (modulaTIon) (up to 256QAM).

Make sure that the access point (AP) or wi-fi router supports the 5 GHz band and is configured for 11ac mode.

If you are not sure if ap is configured for 11ac, please contact the ap manufacturer.

Key settings related to 11ac

1, channel

This setting controls the channel that the AP uses to communicate with client devices on the wi-fi network.

By default, most aps should set this to Auto. We do not recommend changing this setting unless you:

Have a good understanding of the wi-fi channel

Learn how to identify the least crowded channels in your environment

2, channel width

Enable support for all channel widths for optimal performance and compatibility. If configured for only 40MHz or 80MHz, this setting prevents legacy devices that only support 20MHz from connecting to the AP.

3, (wireless) mode

This setting controls the type of wi-fi device (802.11a/b/s/ac) that can be connected to the AP.

For best performance and compatibility, enable support for all wireless modes.

If configured for 11ac mode only, legacy devices that only support 11n or 11 a/g cannot connect to the AP.
