The Astronomical Prize was conferred on Ronald WP Drever, Professor of Physics of the California Institute of Technology, and Kip S Thorne, Professor of Ferdinand Physics at the California Institute of Technology. Rainer Weiss, professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, praised their conception and design of the Laser Interferometer Gravity Wave Observatory (LIGO). For the first time, LIGO has observed gravity waves for the first time, creating a new method for astronomical exploration. The extraordinary case it first detected was the combination of two star-quality black holes.

The Life Science and Medicine Award was awarded to Adrian P Bird, Professor of Genetics at Buchanan University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, and Huda Y, Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in the United States. Zoghbi ), in recognition of their discovery of a class of genes and proteins that can identify chromosomal DNA chemical changes that can affect gene regulation, and the establishment of mutations in this gene is a major cause of developmental disorders of the disease.

The Mathematical Science Prize was awarded to Nigel J Hitchin, a professor of geometry at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, for his outstanding contribution to geometry, theory of representation, and theoretical physics. He introduced basic and elegant concepts and techniques with far-reaching implications.

Chairman of the Run Run Shaw Council and Chairman of the Reviewing Committee, Jane Yuewei, said at the ceremony that after the first Shaw Prize was awarded in 2004, many Shaw Prize winners received other prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize.

| Shaw Prize Introduction

The “Shaw Run Award” is an international award. It was established in November 2002. It has three awards each year, namely “Astronomy Award”, “Life Science and Medicine Award” and “Mathematical Science Award”. It is nominated in September each year. The results of the review were announced in the summer of the following year and the award ceremony was held in the fall. Each award is judged by the Jury Committee under the Shaw Shaw Prize Foundation.

Each of the winners of the 2004 Shaw Prize received a million dollar prize, a medal and a certificate. The "Swiss Run Award" with a huge bonus of one million US dollars is comparable to the "Nobel Prize" which is regarded as the highest natural science award in the world. Therefore, it is known as the "21st Century Oriental Nobel Prize."

According to the statutes, the “Shaw Runfrey Award Foundation” (in Hong Kong) consists of four parts: the board of directors, the board of directors, the judging panel and the secretariat. The judging panel is responsible for selecting the winners. It has 3 award committees, each with a chief judge and 4 judges, responsible for the nomination and selection of candidates. Professor Yang Zhenning, a renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, served as the chairman of the jury. The jurors were hired from around the world for a limited period of time. The judging process starts in June each year and announces the list of winners in June of the following year. The awards are presented in August.

Mr. Shaun Shaw, whose ancestral hometown is Zhenhai, Ningbo, has worked in film and television production in Shanghai and Hong Kong since the 1920s. Since the 1970s, he has served as the chief executive of Hong Kong’s largest television station “Wireless”. The Shaw Shaw Charitable Trust Fund and Shaw Brothers Fund Co., Ltd., which he founded, are committed to funding the development of education, research, medical welfare and cultural undertakings. The donation of funds to the education, science, culture, and health industry in the Mainland alone exceeds HK$2.5 billion. As early as 1985, he had the intention of rewarding outstanding scientists. After the initiative of Prof. Ma Lin, former president of the University of China, he finally established the “Shaw Prize”.

The front of the medal is an embossed portrait of Mr. Shaw Shaw, next to the Shaw Prize in English and the “Shaw Run Prize” in Chinese. The back of the medal shows the awards, the relevant award year and the names of the winners of the year. In the upper right corner, the seal of the Chinese famous phrase “manufacture the destiny and use it” (quoted from the nephew) means “to grasp the laws of nature and use him.”
