In 2017, voice computing became the mainstream. In this wave, Amazon took the lead and sold more than 8 million Echo and Dot speakers in just two years. From the refrigerator to the robot to the US Ford F-150, which has been the number one sales force in the United States for 40 years, Alexa can be seen.
Coupled with Google Home, and Siri speakers that Apple may release this summer, there will undoubtedly be more than 25 million voice computing device shipments this year.
With the rapid growth of voice computing devices, some core issues have also been exposed. According to the latest research from Voice Labs, 97% of users will lose interest in Alexa's new features and use it less than two weeks away; at the same time, less than one-third of Alexa’s 10,000 features won. However, this does not mean that speech calculations are failing, and that speech calculations suffer because it is only part of the computational revolution in the future.
Scenario calculation means that anyone in a scene (such as a home) can directly use its functions without resorting to intermediate devices such as mobile phones and computers. Speech calculation is just one of many ways you can interact directly with the scene.
Voice performance is excellent when you are clear about your needs (for example, if you want to know the weather forecast). But in other cases - such as when you need to select an option from a list, confirm information, or view available features, there is nothing left to tell. The universal scene computing device will have a variety of interactive interfaces, and the user can freely select according to specific application scenarios and personal preferences.
This raises the question of which interactive interface is most frequently used in a variety of scenarios. We recently conducted a small-scale test with Brilliant Control, a smart home control panel. By analysing thousands of interactions in families that have voice services enabled, we found that the frequency of voice interactions is 14%, while the frequency of touch interactions is as high as 81%, and the use of action interactions is only 5%.
Why touch interactions are used most frequently? There are three reasons:
easy to use. When you enter the room, it is relatively easy to turn on the lights by swiping your finger.
Easy to choose. When you need to choose from a variety of options, such as selecting a track in a music player's playlist, it's much more natural to go through the screen.
Feedback is timely. Adjusting the light level or volume by swiping your finger is faster and easier than issuing continuous voice commands until you find the right light level and volume.
Although there are many deficiencies, speech computing still plays an important role. In fact, the total use of voice computing in the home has increased. The reason is simple. Alexa can cover more rooms in the home than other interactions. We believe that speech computing plays an important role in the future family, but it is not a complete solution in itself.
The scope of the scene calculation is much broader than a single speech interaction. If Amazon has a built-in screen in the next generation of Echo speakers, it will provide a richer and more efficient interface. This will help voice computing find and retain users while consolidating Amazon’s leadership in voice computing. Amazon’s recently introduced “display cards†feature shows that they are moving in this direction by helping voice service partners gain the ability to feed back visual data to voice commands.

We predict that by 2018, more than 50% of households will have smart home devices. The full realization of the scenario calculation will make our interaction with the family more interesting and enjoyable, no longer as clumsy as today's mobile phone control and single voice control. We will see this change not only from big companies like Amazon, but also from the products of small companies adopting their open platforms. If Google and Apple also open up platforms to third parties in the future, then we will be surprised to find out how out-of-date the house is, and how frustrating it is.
