China Semiconductor Lighting Network: As we all know, Xu Ming has teamed up with domestic companies to build an upstream chip factory. What is the current progress of Xu Rui? How to continuously reduce the cost of chips?

Chuong Tran: The Xurui LED chip project is the only project for SemiLEDs to invest in mainland China. With a total investment of more than 350 million US dollars, it is expected that after the completion of the third phase of investment at the end of 2013, the company can reach more than 100 MOCVD equipment, capable of producing 4 inch, 6 inch LED epitaxial wafers and high-power, high-brightness LED chips.

The establishment of the chip manufacturer demonstrates our opportunity to provide direct support and services to companies developing solid-state lighting. We have built a new factory in Foshan, and China has indeed created a good opportunity for us to bring these companies together, which has greatly increased our production capacity. The new plant has developed very rapidly, and we are pleased that the new plant will begin production at the end of 2010. For equipment in mainland China, 4-inch epitaxial wafer production can be described as one of the future research and development priorities, which will be the first step to reduce production costs. At the same time, reducing production costs is also very important for the development of the solid-state lighting market.

China Semiconductor Lighting Network: On the technical level, what is your company's characteristics in the chip manufacturing process?

Chuong Tran: SemiLEDs' chip technology is very unique. We are the only chip manufacturer that can use vertical structures and metal substrates. When it comes to the thermal management and brightness of our large and high power LED chips, the effect of using this technology will be very obvious. Xuming Optoelectronics is committed to the development of the solid-state lighting market and the LED industry to provide the best service for different market segments. China Semiconductor Lighting Network: Is the LED industry development like the development of the IC industry? How do you view the development of the LED industry today?

Chuong Tran: Like the development of the IC industry, the LED industry is entering a period of rapid development. Since the middle of 2009, the LED industry has developed rapidly, and this strong growth will continue until 2010. The driving force for LED industry market growth is mainly due to the market growth of LED-backlit notebook computers and the development of LED-backlit LCD TVs. In the short term, the backlight market will continue to be the main driving force in the LED market. In addition, the penetration rate of solid-state lighting in other markets, such as LED road lighting and general lighting, will also increase. Since green lighting needs to improve the lighting efficiency and light efficiency of the luminaire, the LED industry can develop and maintain continuous growth in mainland China and the world.

Chuong Tran: When it comes to marketing strategies in China, for SemiLEDs, China is a very important market in terms of its scale of development and potential for development. China Semiconductor Lighting Network: How do you view the future LED industry landscape? What suggestions do you have for the healthy development of China's LED industry?

Chuong Tran: In the next few years, LED chips will become a key element in the future development of the solid-state lighting market. LED represents an innovation that can greatly change the general lighting market. However, there are still some problems in the development of the LED industry, which requires us to give priority to solving.

First, chip makers need to further increase the brightness of their products, with a luminous efficacy of at least 100 lm/W, which will replace traditional lighting on a large scale. The new bare chip developed by Xuming Optoelectronics has a luminous efficacy of more than 120 lm/W, which has a significant improvement in brightness.

Secondly, in terms of the development of the solid-state lighting market, the design of thermal management system is also a very important link. For example, when the LED junction temperature rises, the LED's efficacy and lifetime will rapidly decrease, indicating that thermal management is not only important for LED chips, but also plays a decisive role in the overall LED lighting system.

Third, reliability is also a link that cannot be ignored in the development of the LED industry. At least 25,000 hours of continuous working time is required to reduce the total cost of ownership.

Fourth, in order to ensure that the luminaire can provide a higher output, it is also necessary to increase the chip size.

Finally, reducing costs is a key element driving the development of China's entire LED industry.

Increasing the size of the epitaxial wafer, improving the efficiency of the luminaire can reduce the production cost, and at the same time, it plays a vital role in driving the LED into the general lighting market.
