Differences between Managed and Unmanaged Ethernet Switches

A friend asked about the difference between network management and non-managed switches. This is often encountered when selecting switches. Managed switches are more powerful than non-managed switches. It usually provides Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for monitoring connection status, STP, other QOS-like advanced features, and VLANs. These features vary by vendor and model. Managed switches are much more expensive than non-managed switches, and they take more time to configure than unmanaged switches. The differences between network management and non-managed Ethernet switches are described in detail below.

First, non-managed switches

Disadvantages of unmanaged switches:

1. Non-network management industrial switches have limited functions and are suitable for small networks.

2, does not support ARP protection, ARP attack is not a virus and therefore almost all anti-virus software do nothing to help; but it is like a virus - because it can cause slow communication, network paralysis, and will cause information leakage.

3, does not support the binding of mac address.

4. The division of vlan is not supported. End users connected to unmanaged switches are in the same broadcast domain. A broadcast storm may erupt and cannot be protected or suppressed. The entire network appears to be congested, blocked, and flooded, causing the entire network to collapse.

5, does not support flow-based control.

6. The reliability of data transmission is poor, and packet loss is serious.

7. The assembly is single and cannot be applied to large and medium-sized networks. There are major limitations to the network upgrade and expansion.

8, management inconvenience, hardware failure rate is relatively large.

Non-managed switch advantages:

1, cheap, save money.

2, the dense number of ports.

3, the user is flexible.

Second, managed Ethernet switches

The advantages of managed Ethernet switches

1, backplane bandwidth, data forwarding faster.

2. Flexible networking and application of the access layer of large and medium-sized networks.

3, the provided port is flexible, according to the application of the network to select different interface formats such as: SFP, GE, fast Ethernet, Ethernet and so on.

4, support for the division of vlan, users can be divided for different areas of the application, effective control and management of the network. Progress suppressed broadcast storms. 5. The network management switch has large throughput, low Packet Loss, and low latency.

6, based on the source, destination, network segment data flow control.

7. Link aggregation allows switches and switches, as well as switches and servers, to be bound together through multiple Ethernet ports for load balancing.

8, with ARP protection, and improve the network to reduce ARP spoofing.

9, with a MAC address binding.

10. The port mirroring function can copy the traffic and status of a port to another port of the switch for supervision.

11, support for DHCP features.

12. Access Control List It can control IP data packets, such as limiting its traffic, access, and providing QoS.

13, has a good security performance: the switch can be MAC address filtering, MAC address lock, and can build a static MAC forwarding table.

14, can support IEEE802.1Q and port technology based VLAN. The GVRP (GARP, VLAN registration protocol) and GMRP (GARP multicast registration protocol) involved in the IEEE 802.1Q VLAN are also widely supported.

15. With SNMP function, it can better manage and control the network.

16, easy to expand, flexible applications, can be managed through network management software, but also through its own access control to remote access. Increase the security and controllability of the network.

Unmanaged switches are simple to use, but they are not configurable. The web-managed version has a web management page. You can log in to the web management page through ip to configure the switch (distribute the port vlan, set the port rate, and so on).

Waterproof D-Sub Connector & D-SUB Adapter

IP66 / IP67 waterproof d-sub connectors-Designed for IP Performance

ANTENK has developed IP66 / IP67 waterproof d-sub connectors that utilize a proprietary sealing technology, which maintains the same physical size and footprint as standard d-sub products.

Antenk's line of Waterproof d-sub connectors utilize an innovative sealing technology eliminating the need to redesign enclosures and PC boards when implementing IP67 design upgrades. These connectors are designed for applications that require protection from heavy spray or are exposed to short-term submersion. Connectors are available in vertical and right angle board mount types as well as solder cup for panel mount cable applications. Standard D-Subs are available in 9 pin, 15 pin, and 25 pin positions, and high density D-Subs are available in 15 pin, 26 pin, and 44 pin positions

Applications of Antenk waterproof d-sub connectors:
Hand held computers, scanners, and printers that are used outdoors
Remote sensors, gauges, and data loggers that are used outdoors
Industrial and Medical equipment that is routinely subject to wash down
Transmitters and emergency beacons that are subject to temporary submersion
Gas, Electric, and Water metering systems that have embedded Smart Grid electronics
Portable electric generation equipment (Gen Sets)
Consumer and Commercial boating electronics (Radios, Scanners, Radar, DC Power Ports)
