The US Air Force has developed a new high-efficiency, radiation-resistant solar cell for use in space.
U.S. Air Force Develops New High-Efficient Solar Radiation Resistant Solar Cell
The Inverted Deformed Multiple Junction (IMM) solar technology developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has increased energy efficiency at reduced cost and will be used primarily in military space applications.
The multi-layered light-absorbing material of each cell means that it can convert the specific wavelength of the solar spectrum into energy.
The IMM battery is said to be 15% higher power than similar standard multijunction solar arrays.
Developers said the new solar cell can be used to address efficiency issues and needs of the public community space, and free up more space for other satellites tool.
"We have found that by inverting epitaxial cells on gallium arsenide, we can more effectively adjust the material properties of the individual absorber layers," said Kerry Bennington, an electronics engineer at AFRL's Materials and Manufacturing Division.
